Clark County has the highest population in Nevada, estimated in 2008 at 1,86,746. The City of Las Vegas is in Clark County and has been the county seat since creation of the county, split from Lincoln County in 1908. Most of the county was part of Pah-Ute County, Arizona Territory, prior to Nevada becoming a state.
Clark County is defined on the southeastern boundary with Hoover Dam forming Lake Mead along most of it's length. We call our area the Las Vegas Valley, however, it is actually a wide basin surrounded by four mountain ranges. Other than the forests on Mount Charleston, Clark County is a desert, creosote bushes are the primary native vegatation and surrounding mountains are mostly rock with little vegetation.
The Clark County Government Center is located in the City of Las Vegas and includes an outdoor amphitheater. Compared to the US average of 100, Dec. 2009 cost of living index in Clark County was 91.2.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department provides most law enforcement services in Clark County except for UNLV, the Clark County School District, and some other cities within Clark County like Henderson, Mesquite, Boulder City and North Las Vegas who have their own police force.
